Teryl Dobbs: “Experiencing Music in the Holocaust”
Music in the Holocaust: Expressions of Hope and Horror
Presented in partnership with Violins of Hope – Wisconsin, a project of the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra
Featuring Dr. Teryl (Teri) Dobbs, Professor Emerita, UW–Madison
Music in the Holocaust is often perceived as a means of hope, resistance, and inspiration. However, a darker side also existed: the Nazi regime employed music as propaganda, for inciting riots, and even as a form of torture. Hence, music was experienced in profoundly different ways—it could soothe, comfort, and inspire hope as well as serve as a source of pain.
Join Dr. Teryl (Teri) Dobbs, Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, for a public talk exploring the complicated musical experience of the Holocaust.
Presented as part of the Violins of Hope – Wisconsin residency, this event reflects the project’s mission to illuminate the resilience of the human spirit through the stories of restored instruments that survived the Holocaust.
