Student Spotlight: Giovanna

Instrument: Violin
School: Bridges Virtual Academy
Next step: St. Olaf College, music major

“I’ve never been outside of the country before, but it’s been a dream of mine to travel since I was a kid,” Giovanna says. “I also really love music and all the friends I’ve made in MYSO, so performing in Europe seemed like it would be an incredible experience.”

Giovanna has spent the past three years in MYSO, where weekly rehearsals, challenging repertoire, and strong friendships have helped her grow as both a musician and a person. “MYSO made me realize I wanted to study music,” she says. “I don’t think I’d be the person I am today without it.”

Giovanna is embracing the excitement of the tour and the nerves that come with it. She’s preparing by practicing intensely, brushing up on local culture and history, and making sure she has everything she needs for her first long flight.

She’s especially looking forward to performing the Brahms Piano Quartet and Copland’s The Tender Land, two pieces that have become favorites. But she’s also aware that the experience will include moments of deep reflection. “Visiting places like Auschwitz will be difficult. I think I’m ready—but I know I won’t fully understand it until I’m there.”

As she heads to St. Olaf College this fall, Giovanna leaves MYSO with a heart full of gratitude and a suitcase packed for growth.

Her advice to younger students? “Practice early, and don’t be afraid to talk to people—everyone at MYSO is really kind. You’ll find your place.”
