This German violin was crafted by Michael Strobel in Berlin in 1942, at the height of the Second World War. Built during a time when Europe was engulfed in violence and persecution, the instrument reflects the stark contrast between the destructive machinery of war and the enduring creation of music. Though little else is known of its early history, the violin itself is a reminder that even in the darkest years, luthiers continued their craft, and music continued to exist alongside destruction.
Now part of the Violins of Hope collection, the Strobel violin carries forward both its maker’s skill and the memory of the era in which it was created.
