This cello was built in 1896 by Carl Zach, a violin and cello maker based in Vienna. Instruments from Zach’s workshop were known for their craftsmanship and solid sound, and this cello is a fine surviving example of his work.
The cello eventually came into the possession of the Palestine Orchestra, founded in Tel Aviv in the 1930s by Jewish refugees who had fled Europe. One of its players, however, decided not to continue with the instrument. It was then acquired by Moshe Weinstein, who purchased it directly from that musician.
Through this connection, the cello became part of the Weinstein family’s collection of instruments, preserved and cared for across generations.
